A Visit to the Lazy Cow

The Lazy Cow Cafe is on Mull which is a 10 minute ferry ride away. The Lazy Cow is also closed on my regular days off. And to complicate things it is only open 11 to 4:30 therefore going on an afternoon between shifts is not possible. I had to switch days off to make it happen. Now I just needed a couple of lunch companions and the weather to cooperate. This is Scotland, is the weather ever going to cooperate? Probably not. Yet I’ve been here long enough not to care. “Have waterproofs. Will adventure.”

The clouds were spectacular all day so that made the weather game even better. Shall we go? YES!

What a day! First the bitter then the sweet. I had to say goodbye to Barbara, a housemate I’ve enjoyed so much. There was rain and that fit the mood. I’ve told you how there is a rotation of volunteers throughout the season. It’s how the work gets done, since only paid staff can afford to been here for the full season February through November. While I’m used to the goodbyes that is not to say they are easy. Many new friends to stay in touch with.

After waving Barbara off I headed back to the abbey for a program session. I don’t usually get to attend the programs. It was grand to sit with guests and dig into their week of learning with them. We heard long bible stories of Jeremiah’s prophet life and then had good discussions. The second hour of our time together we sang resistance songs. I love singing here. All voices are welcome and we sound so good in rooms built with good acoustics.

After a tea break it was off to the jetty, sprinkles of rain but spectacular clouds. I sailed with two volunteer companions over to Fionnaphort and we started out walk to The Lazy Cow. There’s a nice paved path so we didn’t have to risk life and limb and walk on the one track road. Yikes! The West Coast Motors coaches are double decker affairs that mean business.

What a beautiful walk. I’ve seen this from the bus however to walk slowly with friends, to chat and take a few photos, to really look at what I am seeing, that was the gift of our walk. And the weather cooperated. I think it was because I was wearing my waterproofs and the others had theirs on hand. We stayed dry and happy. We also got hungry!

A forty-five minute walk for lunch will work up an appetite. We were rewarded! We all ordered the same sandwich. Here are the yummy facts from the menu: Spicy Korean Chargrilled Sandwich: Char-grilled sourdough smothered in garlic butter, with Korean chili marinated steak and pan-fried onions, peppers, cheese, (no jalapenos on mine), kewpie dressing, and curly fries.

I got a Posh Pop as well. So many different sounding flavors to try. I settled on pear & elderflower. I was not disappointed.

Such a satisfying meal. We now had the energy to mosey back to the ferry. Along the way we stopped to photograph the duck in the pond. First and only lillypads I’ve seen here. We stopped into the wee church and signed the guest book. Clare has signed the book many years in a row now. It was fun when she looked back at all her walking companions. And it was lovely to be added to the group this year.

Now I’m singing the praises of The Lazy Cow to all my other volunteer friends still at the abbey; telling them: Arrange a day to go to The Lazy Cow it’s worth the effort. Highly recommend.
