Peace & Justice Service
On Monday June 23, 2025 I lead another service in the Iona Abbey. The theme on Mondays is always Pease & Justice. Here is what I had to say on the topic.
The theme of this service, peace and justice scares me. Because I am not up to the task. There are so many problems. There is so much action needed. Where could I possible start?
Which passion of mine should I dive into?
Should I worry about the children in my school district who need art supplies and classes to feed their creativity?
Should I write my congressman to let them know I’m upset with the way they are treating immigrants in my country?
Can I recycle enough to make a difference?
Where should I place my love and care for planet earth and all the creatures on her?
I hate to think I am not doing my part when so many people have so many good ways of working on the complex problems we face.
After a little soul searching, I discovered I have a superpower that is needed.
I am the one who can support those making a difference.
I am the one who can bring them coffee.
I will make sure their work room is well lit.
I am the one who can help the team find time to rest.
I will be the one to put supplies away when they are finished working.
I will come to the rally.
I will offer love and joy to those who are weary from the fight.
I will remind them the work they do is desperately needed.
I will acknowledge their work.
I will cheer on their efforts to launch new ideas and well-thought-out plans.
I will give them a hug when they have to take two steps back.
I will be the shoulder to cry on when the way seems hopeless.
I will love.
Not everyone is meant to be front and center. Not everyone has a big idea.
Coming together as community means some of us are the support staff.
I used to think this was a small thing. But there is nothing small about keeping our communities strong and healthy through caring for all the members.
If you have a passion for a particular peace and justice mission, please put all your love and energy into it. We need all the good ideas and plans we can get. There is no single golden solution to the complex problems we face. It will take many ideas and plans. So, if you have an idea for the common good by all means give it a go.
However, if you are one who is better suited for the background, for the support team, for the one fetching coffee and donuts, please realize your job is equally important. Big ideas can’t function without many small acts of support as a foundation.
