Abbey Kitchen Gadgets

The kitchen is a place where health & safety are very important. You could get really hurt. I have managed to not get burned. I’ve only cut myself once and that was really grating my thumb knuckle. Ouch. This is rather impressive to me. I thought I was prone to being a klutz around sharp object. However, I as shown how to use these things properly and they are very useful. Allow me to explain what I now enjoy using in the abbey kitchen.

My chopping skills have really improved. For one thing I’ve been shown how to do it properly with the end of the knife closest to the handle, not the tip. I don’t race along as fast an Anja—I don’t want to loose a finger—but I am better than I was; chopping 12 bunches of dill and 12 more of parsley was good practice. OY! I love good knives and have been here long enough to have favorites from the knife wall.

The bread slicer is another gadget I like to use. When you have to serve up 100 slices for guests to make sandwiches it’s brilliant to have a machine to help you. I like dialing up the size slice you want. It’s a bit noisy though.

The mandoline is a toy I want to get for my own kitchen when I get home. Super fast way to slice carrots, cucumbers, potatoes, and who know what else. I’ll find out. The blade is VERY sharp. There’s a special glove to wear so you don’t accidentally slice off the tip of your thumb. Unlike the bread slicer the mandoline is silent which makes it seem even more deadly.

The last gadget in the line of photos is an industrial size can opener. It works like a dream. A good can opener is essential. This one will blaze through our huge cans of tomato sauce and olive oil among other things. I don’t need it often but when I do it’s quite nice.
