In So Many Little Ways
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs on your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Luke 12:6-7
Every month I look forward to reading the new isse of Guideposts magazine*. I enjoy the inspirational stories. They do exactly what they are meant to, give me strength, hope and trust in our heavenly Father.
The stories of God working in someone’s life in a dramatic way are exciting but can leave me cold. I’ve noticed it’s the stories of the little things that really give me the shivers. A woman wrote about how she started a daily blessings journal and slowly, ever so slowly, she began to see her life as filled with God’s gifts. Another story told how a woman knit a sweater for a needy child and that one sweater pattern was handed around the community and then the country and over the years 350,000 sweaters have been knit, sent to Guideposts and then sent to children in need.
I am so moved by the little things because that is how I meet God in my life. I do not feel the big drama of God moving mountains on my behalf; rather I am touched by the small ways He meets me. A walk in the morning, not a big deal, however it can be an hour of prayer. An unexpected quiet afternoon, not a dramatic setting, but it can be a time spent writing my hiking thoughts. A hug from my son, a call from my mother, a conversation with my husband, flowers blooming, rain refreshing the earth there are so many little ways God works in my life.
That the Creator of the universe would care about something as trivial as cuddle time with a kitty, or the splendor of a Spring day, now that’s enough to give me shivers. He care about me personally in so many little ways. And He cares about you in the very same way.
