That Sinking Feeling
You know that sinking feeling, the one you get when you’ve forgotten an important birthday, when you’ve missed an important meeting for a dumb reason, or when you’ve just made a very embarrassing public mistake. Ouch. I have that sinking feeling right now; I forgot to write my column this week. I’ve disappointed a friend. I’ve forgotten to take time to look around and see the glory! Where has God been in my week and I’ve missed it? Where have I met joy and let it slip through my fingers. I forgot to look this week and it has given me that sinking feeling.
Excuses come to mind. It’s such a busy time of year; the ending of the school year and the planning for summer. While I know God is patient with me I think he must get as tired of my excuses as I do with the kids at school. “I forgot. I don’t know. I don’t remember. I can’t.” It’s tiresome to try and rally the kids to hang in there and get their work done. The end of the year is a time of joy and parties and moving on but we still have three weeks of school left. There are still a few things we have to cover before we can let the children go for the summer.
So I am setting my excuses aside and thinking of the points where I had a good week and want to give praise to God. I heard this week I will be published in the May/June 2007 issue Upper Room. I watched the lavendar in my front yard grow four inches this week. I made a delicious dinner two nights in a row. I soaked in the hot tub. I got excited about a new women’s ministry project I am in charge of this fall. I cuddled with my kitty who has fully recovered from surgery. I read a really good book. I sang a difficult song in choir on Sunday and stayed in tune. I worked in the garden. I prayed with a friend and got prayers from another. I finally walked the hill by my home. So many times I should have said thank you and I didn’t. What a sinking feeling. I am glad now God is a patient Father and willing to let me use my good manners belatedly. Thank you Dear Daddy for all the blessings of this week.
