Can You Hear That?
I am 48 years old now and the technology of the modern world is zinging by me. I tease my husband that I only married him for tech support. And when Rod isn’t home I have my teenage son to help me. So it was not a surprise when Rod came home the other evening to ask, “Have you heard this new ring tone?” I can’t even reach 100 minutes a month with my cell phone, so no I haven’t heard about a new ring tone. “It’s one only teenagers can hear, they call it the mosquito.” “You’ve got to be kidding me.” “No. Watch this.” Rod flipped out his iphone and touched the screen a few times. Then Zach our 15-year-old son said, “Can you hear that?” “No.” Neither could my husband. Apparently those over 35 can’t hear this high-pitched frequency. I felt old; having a teenager does that to you on occasion. We tested and tested and each time Zach was the only one who could tune into the sound coming from the phone. Weird.
I got to thinking later about a frequency I do hear that is just as subtle as a mosquito flying through the backyard. When I am tuned in I can hear the whisper of God in my ear. Considering the chaos of my world some days it’s a wonder I pick up the buzz of something more. But there it is clear and sane cutting through pressures and demands, a gentle voice that rests on my heart and calms my stresses. Listen, you to may be able to hear the small voice inside as well. Be still, and know that He is God.
