I am not one to make a big splash. I am often behind the scenes. I spend most of my day alone doing chores and keeping our home running. I am rather anonymous. So it was a surprise to me when a gal in the neighborhood stopped me to say “I enjoyed listening to you on the handbells.” Huh. Really? She had seen me in church ringing with my son one Sunday over the holidays.

I was surprised again when I got a letter from a friend telling me I’d been an inspiration for him. Huh. Really? I figured no one was watching me. Of course I know my family is aware of the things I do. I realize the people I see daily or weekly in my life notice me and care for me. What gave me pause today was to see how far the ripples of my life go.

People I don’t know by name, folks I see only in an audience or hear from only by email are part of my sphere of influence. The tiny things I do matter. This made me think of just how God works. He noticed me before I was born and takes delight in me as his daughter. He uses me in his whole world. Both the people I love and see daily AND the people who just pass through my life quickly are people I can touch. My hope is that I am gentle and careful with this knowledge. The things I do just living my life are important to do with intension, to do with the love of Christ shining through. For I am not anonymous. Lots of people are watching. God is watching.
