Tangerines

Last weekend I took my son down to Sunnyvale to visit his cousin. When I pulled up to the house I saw their tangerine tree was covered with fruit. My brother in law put a grocery sack in my hand and invited to me pick as many as I wanted. Sure. The bag was half full when I stopped, that was as many as I thought we could eat before they spoiled. They’ll be more when you want them! Such abundance! I took my prize home to share.

I picture that tangerine tree now in my mind’s eye. It was covered in bright orange fruit all ripe and ready. It occurred to me the hundreds of tangerines were much like all the things I’d like to know about God. There are so many questions, so many qualities, so many mysteries I’ll never understand it all. Looking at the branches drooping with fruit I thought of how small I am in the schemes of things. It’s overwhelming to try and untangle all God is and has to give me. Why should I even bother? Then I looked at the yummy tangerines sitting on my kitchen counter. I have been eating them everyday. They are delicious. I know where I can get more. Rather than worry about figuring out why there is more to God than I’ll even understand I smiled to myself peeled a piece of fruit and popped it in my mouth. Just taste the love.
